The story is enticingâ€"a young person or previously responsible parent goes astray and succumbs to the ravages of alcohol or drugs, is confronted by caring friends and family, and in just one episode, realizes the error of their ways and turns their life around, often through a miraculous yet accessible treatment program. But is the reality really as simple as reality TV would have us believe? Although shows featuring real-life interventions are helpful in giving hope to addicts and their families, and showing that change is possible, they don’t necessarily reflect an accurate view of reality, either for the individuals involved or how an intervention could turn out for those considering an intervention for someone they care about. Do Interventions Work? The term intervention can be confusing because it can be used to refer to the various therapeutic approaches used to treat addiction, many of which are evidence-based  and effective. These include motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and couples therapy. These evidence-based  treatments  and several others, typically take time and commitment on the part of the addicted person but are generally helpful. What we are discussing in this article is not a treatment per se, but rather, a planned attempt by a group of people to persuade someone they are in a relationship with to either quit alcohol or drugs on their own or to seek treatment. This process may be led and guided by an interventionist who is hired by the family or group. An intervention may not be done in an aggressive way,  although sometimes it is accompanied by expression of anger about past wrongdoings of the addicted person, and threats to discontinue or seriously limit the relationship, but it is always in some way confrontationalâ€"even if the confrontation is presented as an invitation, which generally is not effective in overcoming addiction. From a professional standpoint, interventions cannot be recommended, simply because there is not enough research available to support their effectiveness. That doesn’t mean they can’t be effective; it just means that the studies we need in order to “prove” the effectiveness of interventions has not yet been carried out. While a few studies were conducted on the effectiveness of interventions in getting people into treatment during the late 20th century, they typically showed that family members chose not to follow through on confronting their family members. One study showed that when they did follow through, they were able to get their family member into treatment, but in the end, this was a very small number of people, and the outcome of therapy was not reported. Bear in mind that all therapies, no matter how effective, were at one time unproven, went through experimental stages and refinements, were funded for research, and finally, enough studies were conducted showing their effectiveness that they became accepted the practice. But just because they are accepted practice doesn’t mean they are guaranteed to work for everyone. From an anecdotal perspective, interventions have mixed reviews. Some clinicians have had the experience of working with people whose families have conducted interventions that have been helpful in persuading their loved one to get help. Others have had much more negative reviews, in which the intervention was poorly conducted or the addicted individual was not in a place to hear the feedback, and it caused an even greater problem for the addicted individual and an even greater rift in their family. So how do you know whether an intervention  is going to help the person you care about? What seems to be the crucial factor is the experience and skill of the interventionist leading the interventionâ€"perhaps this is why interventions appear so successful on TV shows with large budgets, the best-trained experts, and teams of professionals providing backup support to the individual and family. But in the real world, we have no current systems for evaluating the credentials of interventionists, nor for providing backup if needed, so there is very little information on which to base your decision. Why Would People Use Interventions If They Dont Work? Interventions for addiction are big business, especially in the United States, where they are often portrayed on TV. In desperation, families of people with addictions pour their life savings into interventions, hoping to save a loved one who seems to no longer see reason. Yet the basis of interventions is more about hype than about true recoveryâ€"reality TV is not in the healthcare business, it is in the entertainment business, and the drama of a carefully orchestrated and edited video story of confrontation and redemption is very appealing to the modern American audience. Part of why interventions are so appealing, and also, so unlikely to be effective, is that they offer the dream of a simple solution to an incredibly complex situation. We know from decades of research that people do not become addicted purely by nature or nurture, but a complex interplay between the two. Typically, someone with an addiction is struggling with underlying issues that they may not even be aware of, issues that an interventionist or well-meaning family member are even less likely to be aware of. Although a proportion of people are able to overcome severe addictions on their own, it takes great determination and access to alternative ways of coping to do this. For many others, overcoming addiction requires treatment, and it often takes many attempts to completely quit alcohol and drugs. Of course, this does not mean that people are never helped by an intervention. The process of becoming aware that your behavior is harming yourself, and those around you, is an important step towards recovery, and the first step through the stages of change from pre-contemplation to contemplation. However, confronting someone with an addiction is a very risky approach, and can just as easily backfire, making the addicted person feel attacked, alienated, and misunderstood instead of feeling supported. In these cases, an intervention can even worsen an addiction, causing the person to seek comfort in alcohol and drugs, and to seek out the company of those who understandâ€"drinking and drugging buddies and drug dealers. The Different Stages of How to Overcome Addiction Factors to Consider in Choosing an Interventionist If, after considering the lack of research support, you still feel an intervention might be right for your loved one, here are some common-sense considerationsâ€"NOT based on medical fact or researchâ€"to think about in making the decision to employ an interventionist: Do you know anyone who was helped by the interventionist? If so, were their problems similar to those of the person you care about? Were their characteristics (such as age, culture, and how long they have had the addiction) similar? A personal recommendation from someone dealing with similar issues is often a way that people make decisions about therapists.Talk to the interventionist. Did you develop a good rapport? Do they seem to understand the problems you are describing? Do you get a good “gut feeling” from this person?What is the financial investment? How much do you stand to lose if it doesn’t work out? Could these funds be used on a different program that offers more credibility? Remember that although many people working in the addictions field know what they are doing and genuinely want to help their clients, there are others out there who just want your money, and will prey on the desperation felt by loved ones who are looking for a miracle cure. There are no miracle cures, and overcoming addiction is hard work, especially for the addicts themselves. Alternatives to an Intervention The best approach to treating an addiction depends on a great many factors, including the substance being used, how severe the addiction is, the addicted persons attitude towards treatment and quitting or cutting down, and whether they have concurrent mental and/or physical health problems. A physician is often in the best position to discuss this with the person with the addiction, although many physicians do not have a great deal of training or expertise in addiction, and some are not comfortable working with people with addictions. The American Board of Addiction Medicine provides specialized training and certification for physicians, and so an ABAM certified physician is a great person to help people with an addiction find the right treatment, as well as provide a great deal of treatment themselves. You might also want to consider finding out about other treatment options for your loved one: DetoxMotivational interviewingResidential treatmentSelf-help groups, such as SMART recovery and Sober24 Communicating With Your Loved One Communication with your loved one is important in building and maintaining the trust that is required to support them in recovery. Often, trust in relationships can be badly damaged during an addiction, as the addicted person will often feel it necessary to keep their addictive behavior secret from their loved ones, often believing this is for their own good. Then, when the loved one discovers the addictive behavior or is faced with some of the negative consequences of the addiction, they typically feel betrayed and angry. You may not be able to persuade or bully your loved one into treatment, and in fact, trying to do so may actually make both their addiction and your relationship worse. On the other hand, honest and clear communication is typically very helpful. Setting boundaries around what kinds of behavior cross the line and are unacceptable, and making it clear that you have your own life and needs are extremely important in relationships with people who have addictions. This is often not easy, although knowing what not to say to someone with a drug addiction, and these tips on how to help an addicted friend or relative may be helpful.

These things I learned when I became independent. It was a rather difficult time and I was about to give up, but then I realized I have to go through this. According to Facciponti (2001), Mark Antony is known as a brave soldier, powerful speaker as well as a ladies man. Meanwhile, Antony planed a social intrigue to provoke Queen Cleopatra.However, Cleopatra had her own plan to win over Antony. She set sail on the river Cydnus to meet Antony and seduced Antony. Being enchanted by Queen Cleopatra, Antony left his family and duties and departed for Alexandria. The conflict between Antony and Octavius Caesar became sharp due to Antony’s neglect on political duties. Antony’s marriage with Octavius Caesar’s sister Octavia could not heal the rift between Antony and Octavius Caesar but incensed Caesar because of Antony’s ignorance on Octavia.Therefore he declared a battle on both Antony and Cleopatra. Besides the historical background, Shakespeare’s language is another important element in script adaptation.As Eileen (2010) stated, â€Å"Shakespeare’s language has often been cited as the main obstacle to comprehending his work; whilst this may hold true to a large extent, in the teaching of Shakespeare in the English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom†(P. 317). Obviously, language of the play has to be adapted based on needs the target learners. Similarly, In the drama production, the adaptation of the script has to consider needs and abilities of actors and audience. Target The target actors and audiences of my adapted play Antony and Cleopatra are S. 4-S. students approximately at the age of sixteen to eighteen years old. According to the CDC(2002), the learning objectives for the key stage 4 (S4-S5) students on literature in English require students to â€Å"understand and appreciate prescribed literary in the genres of drama†, â€Å"show appreciation of the language and style through which the comprehension of the thoughts and feelings are conveyed†, â€Å"increase awareness of human relationships and the interaction between the individual and society† and â€Å"appreciate different cultures† (P. 49. ) Therefore, Shakespeare’s Antony andCleopatra, which covers a variety of themes and abundant language within a context of Roman Empire and Egypt, is likely to fit the learning needs of S. 4-S. 5 students. The overall learning goal of the play Antony and Cleopatra for the target actors and audiences would be based on the deliberately chosen themes, plot and characters in the play. As stated by Logan (2006), the play Antony and Cleopatra provoke readers and viewers’ desire to explore the characters and plots in order to gain a clear understanding. This aspect will be discussed specifically in the following section. Language and themeIt is apparent that the main theme of the play Antony and Cleopatra is love. As Maguire (2004) said, Antony and Cleopatra is often considered a tragedy of love. On one hand, the theme of duty is central in this play. According to Shmoop (2010), the conflict between various duties Anony have to burden and his self desire presents the central tension of the play. On the other hand, friendship is also a vital theme in the play. It is obvious that Cleopatra frequently seek support from her servants and friends throughout the play. Last Hurrah Edwin O'Connor's novel The Last Hurrah presents an effective view of the difficult and complex life of the Irish-American community in Boston of the 1950's. The author uses a number of characterizations to produce themes that relate to the political and social considerations of this era. He also provides most of the accounts in his novel from a single perspective, that of Frank Skeffington. He is the main character. This character in particular enables O'Connor to present the topic with some accuracy while continuing to create a fictional account of the time frame. This was his goal, to provide truth inside a fictional story. O'Connor talks directly about and gives great consideration in the system of criminal activity. He feels it directly corresponds with the political structure in the community. The author develops his novel around Skeffington, but also around the characterization of James Michael Curley, the forceful and corrupt political force in the community in Boston. These two characters seem to be greatly different, but they also have some likeness to each other. This novel portrays the complexity of the corruption within this community and the political structure. He also demonstrates the support for this type of institution and its importance within the community itself. There is particular consideration given to the political climate in this story. It is incorporated with social and ethnic concerns that are prevalent. The story also addresses prejudice and the theme of ethnic stereotyping through his character development. O'Connor does not present a work that is riddled with Irish slurs or ethnic approximations. Instead, he attempts to provide an account that is both informative and accurate. One important theme that is developed through the characterization of Skeffington is the great importance he has of the historical perspective on the current life of the Irish immigrant community. While O'Connor uses this character to present a dignified representation of Irish immigrant politics, it is also clear that Skeffington serves as a contrast to Curley. Curley demonstrates a clearly determined form of corruption without concern for the ethnic or political history of the Irish immigrant community. Skeffington cannot ignore the past and the impact history has on his community. Skeffington is a product of the Irish community, and reflects on his origin in many instances through out this story. There are a number of important elements that are unique to the Irish community in Boston and also significant to the life of Skeffington. Some of these elements include historical perspective, the work ethic, and religion. The major conflicts developed are not just products of the perceived political situation or the corruption defined by the individual characters, but also are related to common social and religious perspectives indicative of the community. O'Connor also creates characters that both represent these perspectives and also contrast both Skeffington and Curley. The development of the quiet, somber and almost delicate persona of John Gorman is one contrasting character to the complex Skeffington and the boastful, almost ridiculous Curley. Gorman's dedication to social structures and concern for religion and the family contrast the ideals represented by the candidate and the corrupt political leader. When talking with Gorman at a party, Molly Riordan presents her perspective of Frank Skeffington, and is met with Gorman's skeptical response. Molly says, He's the best of them all, John, God love him. There's not a night goes by I don't say a little prayer for him... (85). Gorman's response is a simple non-committal comment about the party and skeptically attempts to avoid demonstrating any commitment to Molly's remarks. Although Gorman and Skeffington have a close association, there is no determination of any loyalty that exists from Gorman's perspective. He is not dedicated to the cause of Skeffington's election, although that is a primary aspect of many of his interactions. Gorman's odd sense of humor also adds to his presentation of skepticism in regards to Skeffington. When discussing the topic of campaign issues that came up between Skeffington and his nephew, the nephew acknowledges that the topic did come up whenever they were together. Processes can influence the learning of current content Students prior experiences, interests, and thought processes can influence the learning of current content area concepts due to their prior experiences, stress, perceptions and attitudes that can interfere with or distort the material that they are trying to learn. However, learning cannot occur without having prior knowledge because this gives a foundation from which to build from. The link between past experiences, student interest, and present learning is that we draw upon previous experiences and memories as we learn. Teachers need to consider the past experiences as well as interests of students in order to make the lessons more appealing, accessible and interesting. The students past experiences can assist with building new knowledge on top of prior knowledge. Students will learn much faster and learn more if they have a foundation to build upon instead of introducing random bits of information. The sensory registers show us that there are two important educational features present. One, we have to pay attention to any of the information that we have before us so that it can be processed, retained and filed away for further use. The second feature is that it takes time to take the information that has been stored away and bring it to the front for use later. (Slavin, 2006) The Principle of Relevance is one that has been studied and debated about for many decades. Deirdre Wilson Dan Sperber are two individuals how are well known in this particular field where the Theory of Relevance is based on two principles, one being the Communicative Principle and the other being the Cognitive Principle of Relevance. Looking at the Principle of Relevance as the theory within education and students it can be seen how students learn, have learned and will learn as well as relate and recall that information in the future as needed. According to Wilson and Sperber, relevance is a potential property not only of utterances and other observable phenomena, but of thoughts, memories and conclusions of inferences. (Wilson Sperber, 2002) So it can be seen that with students, their past experiences, learning and life as well as interests and the ability to relate and store into memory along with recalling the information can determine how they learn all based on what foundati ons were put in place prior. Students interests are just one of the factors that are known to influence learning in content areas. The teacher needs to use a variety of methods or ways to keep the students interest in the lesson; otherwise they will exhibit a lack of attention or possibly disrupt the class for others. If students do not have any interest in learning what is being presented, then they will not achieve the maximum results in learning the content. There are key principles in brain based learning, these are Importance of meaningful learning, knowledge background, levels of processing development of neural connections, relevance, and activating prior knowledge otherwise known as the Schema Theory. (Slavin, 2006) Looking first at the Importance of meaningful learning it is said that it requires active involvement of the learner who has prior experiences and knowledge to bring understanding as new information is incorporated into memory. Slavin states that it is Mental processing of new information that relates to previously learned knowledge. (Slavin, 2006) Looking next at knowledge background it can be said that the more the person knows about a particular topic or lesson, the more they will be able to learn about. It is said that previous or background knowledge is very important in determining the amount the student will learn, they have a better network already in place in their brains in which the information can be processe d and stored. (Slavin, 2006) With levels of processing, or otherwise known as the Levels of Processing Theory which was proposed by Craik and Lockhart in 1972, suggests people subject stimuli to different levels of mental processing and retain only the information that has been subjected to the most thorough processing. (Craik;Lockhart, 1972) Meaning that the more details that people are subjected to, the more mental processing that must be done and the better the chances are that it will be remembered. This is why repetition of material is necessary for learning and for some, is one of the main processes they use to retain material for later use. It is said that learning starts at birth and continues on through life, this happens with the development of neural connections within the brain. Parents are the first teachers with the environment that they create and expose the child to. As the child grows, teachers are then brought in and the environment that is created within the classroom is added to the mix. All of these are factors that are supposed to help students increase their skill levels; this allows the brain to work more efficiently and effectively. With repetition, the process leads to an automatic response in which as tasks are introduced, it starts to take little effort mentally due to the growth of the neural connections which allows the student to recall information easier. (Slavin, 2006) So when looking into the lesson plans, simple repetition allows the brain to recognize and file away the needed information, and makes it easier over time to recall it for use. This is why providing students more opportunities to practice skills that are needed for the future is very important for it allows the student to gain more knowledge as well as more skills which makes the brain work more efficiently. The Schema Theory otherwise known as activating prior knowledge allows us to gain access to information that we have stored away in our long term memory by following set paths that have been created as stepping stones. (Slavin, 2006) This theory states that information is stored in the long term memory in the schemata, which is a network of connectors to facts and concepts, which provides the basic structure for making sense of all the new information. An example is the memory of riding your first two wheeled bicycle, its thought about, the steps that were taken and the steps flow together along the path to the final goal of riding that bicycle with no training wheels as well as no help from anyone. This memory is stored in the long term memory. Consideration of past experiences, learning, and student interests should be an important part of lesson planning for the teacher because learning is a process that occurs over a long period of time, under different circumstances, with different environments and methods of introduction as well as the interaction socially. Students all interpret instructions differently, while some may receive the correct interpretation, there are those that dont quite understand what is meant all the time. This can lead at times to different explanations though they may arrive at the right answer, the path taken is not the one preferred and identified prior. The learning experience needs to be the process in which it draws upon different interests, past experiences and prior knowledge to draw it all in as one agreeable process. By considering all of this, the student opens up to what is being presented more, filing it away in steps to be identified and recalled at a later time as its being repeated t hough possibly with different methods, as it all draws in to the same end result the light bulb at the end of that tunnel turns on when the information is called forward. India celebrates our 64th Republic Day which is one of three national days in India. Commonly 64th Republic Day is a public holiday in most of the countries to honor the day on which the country first became republics. In such some are Commonwealth countries, the British sovereign was ruling the state until the change of status. Even though India obtained freedom on August 15, 1947, Indian Constitution implemented and came into effect only on January 26, 1950. King George VI, the last and only â€Å"King† of the modern India, was leading our state during the evolution period from 1947 to 1950. Lord Mountbatten and C. Rajagopalachari were serving as the Governors-General of India at that time. Afterwards Rajendra Prasad was elected as the first president of India on January 26, 1950. With this the Parliament officially approved the Constitution of India and declared itself as a â€Å"Republic† on January 26, 1950, a date thereafter celebrated every year as Republic Day in India. Lets know about India Republic Day official celebration in New Delhi. According to the Republic Day celebration on January 26th every year a grand parade is held in New Delhi, the Capital of India, beginning from Raisina Hill near the Presidential Palace Rashtrapati Bhavan, along the Rajpath, past India Gate and on to the historic Red Fort in the heart of the city to honor this occasion. Defence forces of state, Indian Army force, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force performs the past in parade with their ceremonial dress and official decorations on this auspicious occasion of Republic Day. At the end of parade Air Force jets perform a colorful flypast by in a Tiranga formation which is adventurous and eye-catching at a time. Similar celebrations with such parades are held in the capitals of all the states of India on the Republic day. The Governor of the each state takes the salute in their respective celebrations. More over all official government offices will also celebrate this national day which is also considered as people’s day. Once this salutation gets over, a 21 gun salute is presented, the President unfurls the National Flag and the National Anthem is performed. This regards the beginning of the parade. The Republic day Parade commences with winners of bravery awards passing the President in open jeeps. We all are proud to be Indians and would salute the great glory of our country. For many of us, work is where we spend most of our waking hours. Because we devote so much time to our work environment, certain needs must be met from our employers so that business can run efficiently and productively. I have chosen the topic of mental health in the workplace, as it is an area where I believe employers should focus more attention to in order to have a better understanding of the challenges their employees may face. A productive employee who is able to meet their scheduling requirements and perform to the best of their ability, contributes to the growth of the company, which then stimulates the Canadian economy. According to a study done in 2011, â€Å"In any given year, one in five people in Canada experiences a mental health problem or illness, with a cost to the economy of well in excess of $50 billion†.1 Companies and organizations in our country need to increase their awareness about this issue, so that their human resource departments can begin to develop and implement strategies to foster mental wellness in the workplace, as well as to start preventing these major costs to the company and our economy.
